SCAM ALERT – Ontario Energy Assistance Program scam

July 12, 2021

We have become aware of a new scam impersonating the Ontario Energy Board.

There are emails circulating as well as Facebook pages and posts coming from “Energy Assistance Program” or “Electricity Assistance Program”. There have also been reports of similar content referring to “Ontario Green Savings”.

These scams are promoting energy rebates and appear to be using Ontario Energy Board logo, name and images. They are asking for personal information and promising rebates after a home visit.

If a company claims that an energy assessment or home inspection is required to apply or qualify for any of the provincially funded programs: COVID-19 Energy Assistance Program (CEA), Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP) or Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP), this is false.

Protect your personal information – do not provide any personal information over the phone. Your utility bill is private, and your utility already has the information it contains.

You can find up to date information on legitimate energy assistance programs by visiting our Payment Assistance page or by visiting the Ontario Energy Board website.

You can read more about this scam in this Consumer Alert from the Ontario Energy Board.
