Halton Hills Hydro warns customers of phone scam

(Halton Hills, ON) July 30, 2014 – Phone Scam Targets Hydro Customers.
Halton Hills Hydro has been made aware of a phone scam targeting electricity customers throughout Ontario. The scam involves a caller posing as a utility official and threatening to cut off electricity to residents if they don’t immediately make payment through money wire transfer or pre-paid credit cards. The calls are coming from a 1-800 number.
Customers are reminded that Halton Hills Hydro’s credit department never makes calls from a 1-800 number and never asks for payment via pre-paid credit card or wire transfer.
If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately and remember to never give out personal information over the phone. If you have any questions about your account, please call our office at 519-853-3701.
While we have not yet had reports of the scam in our area, we urge our customers to be cautious when receiving unsolicited phone calls.
