March 17, 2021
We have had reports of customers receiving calls from scammers impersonating the OEB or Halton Hills Hydro and falsely claiming customers that a home inspection is required to qualify for the CEAP energy assistance program.
It is important to note that NO home inspection is required to qualify for this program. All eligible customers who applied for this program in Halton Hills have already received funding. This program is no longer available in Halton Hills.
If you receive a call requesting a home visit or requesting information about your account, hang up immediately. Do not provide any personal information over the phone.
Scam Prevention Tips:
- Beware of messages with COVID-19 in the subject line claiming to be from Halton Hills Hydro or the OEB. There have been several reports of emails, texts and websites sharing false information refunds and alternative payment methods during the COVID-19 emergency.
- Protect your personal information – do not provide any personal information over the phone. Your utility bill is private, and your utility already has the information it contains.
- Remain vigilant and continue to use safe web browsing and email practices. To contact Halton Hills Hydro, make sure you visit haltonhillshydro.com or call us at 519-853-3701.
- Report suspicious activity to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or call 1-888-495-8501.
The COVID-19 Energy Assistance Program (CEAP) was a Government of Ontario program that provided funding to help residential and small commercial customers struggling to pay for their energy bills due to COVID-19. The program provided a set amount of funds to each utility in the province to distribute to customers until the fund was exhausted.
